Abstract
The magnetic properties of a material originate from the spins of its electrons and from the interactions between them. In low-dimensional structures such as chains or kagome lattices, the geometry can prevent all magnetic interactions from being satisfied simultaneously, giving rise to magnetic frustration and unusual collective states. In this project, we investigate how these magnetic states evolve as temperature and magnetic field are varied. We focus on spin-ice systems and one-dimensional spin chains, where magnetic fluctuations can occur over a wide range of time scales. AC magnetometry is used to probe slow changes in the magnetization, while muon-spin spectroscopy provides access to much faster local magnetic fluctuations. By combining these techniques, we aim to understand how reduced dimensionality and magnetic frustration influence the dynamics of low-dimensional magnetic systems.
